I wouldn't blame your missing the humor on the regretful lack of marijuana usage. However, it definitely would have helped loosen the laughbox.
This movie has a certain charm in its self deprecating humor. It maintains its 'believability' with the crew's real life predicaments and tragic ineptitude, and then flips the script with slapstick punchline scenes. I think the cameos were just that, cameos, which are as you say: attempts to "pump up the film with a special guest star or two." I agree with your overall assesment of this film, except for the negative tone. Most of the things you find silly or out of place make me laugh. At the end of the movie, when they play their final video, the laughing voice over of the shark has to break you down, or you're just not human. And when the actors broke character, unable to contain themselves, I laughed out loud.
This movie reminded me how much fun it is goofing off, trying to get a laugh. I was reminded of making movies with my stoner friends in high school.
I don't think the cast and crew thought this movie would be a blockbuster. Noone could expect that. In its own way, it is a true success. I think you are correct, Rebecca Wright, this is a stoner comedy. I put it on my shelf next to Grandma's Boy and Pineapple Express.
